1st Review for INTEOTWIJTEOAE

Posted in News on February 3, 2010 by thepressthepress

It’s still a few months out, but here’s the first review of INTEOTWIJTEOAE.

Thanks Performer Magazine.

RECORD REVIEW: The Press
INTEOTWIJTEOAE
“Capturing the subtleties of life with ear-turning
dynamics and artful, ambient layers”
Brooklyn, NY
Produced by the Press & Jim Bentley
Recorded at the Fort by Jim Bentley
Mastered at 4130 Mastering by Dave Roman

By: Lulu McAllister

When a pack of individually talented songwriters coalesces for the sake of collective improvement, you get what Brooklyn-based quartet the Press calls “co-op rock.” In the last half-decade, the boys have already turned out a handful of quirky, energetic albums. Now, with their fifth release on Goodnight Records, INTEOTWIJTEOAE (pronounced in-tee-aught-whit-ee-ay), the self-proclaimed “band of contradictions” hones its collaborative prowess into something dynamic and varied, yet still ?artfully balanced.

Paying special attention to transitions within songs and from track to track, the boys paint a picture of “strip malls and subways, security gates and jackhammers, termites and Entenmann’s snack, volcanoes, jellyfish and thimbles.” A combination of refreshingly candid lyrics, worked on by each member of the group, and playful instrumental accents keeps straightforward melodies interesting. Catchy intro track, “Master,” is churning and slightly demonic, with the Press’s trademark irreverent vocal delivery and dancing sheet guitar. “Big Boss, Little Boss” and “Pineapple Rabbits” employ a wider range of energy, moving through introspective instrumental breakaways and emotive vocals – finally juicing back up with racing guitars and spasmodic sing-shout, a la Modest Mouse.

Perhaps the most rewarding moment in INTEOTWIJTEOAE occurs when its turnstile track, “Dropped from Airplanes,” floats calm, distilled notes and cracks of distant percussion in an ambient space right into whirring, polyrhythmic, big-sky composition “The Rack” at the center of the album. Similarly, final track “Jellyfish Wrangler” wanders to a particularly beautiful close amid softer, near-surf guitar and vocalization sliding gracefully in and out of tune. (Goodnight Records)
